Snickerdoodles

My Mother is famous for her Snickerdoodles. I substitute two sticks of butter for the shortening with fabulous results.

Mix together:
1 cup soft shortening
1½ cups sugar
2 eggs

Sift together and stir in:
2 ¾ cups flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt

Chill dough one hour, or as long as overnight. Roll into balls size of walnuts.

Roll balls in mixture of:
4 Tablespoons sugar
4 teaspoons cinnamon

Place two inches apart on unoiled cookie sheets. Bake at 400° until lightly browned, but still soft 8-10 minutes. Remove to wire racks, cool.

Makes 3 1/2 dozen.
