Mammoth Mountain Ski Area

Monday | 10 April 2000 | Mammoth, California: We didn't do very much yesterday evening... drove into town and bought a few groceries. I made a pizza and was very happy knowing Lisa, Lynn and Kelsey were together having pizza in Washington, D.C. It was very cold last night - a low of 25! Of course, we were toasty warm inside our coach. This morning we woke to brilliant blue skies. DT ran and we cleaned Goldie (it takes 30 minutes!) and later took off in the BC2 to explore the forests around Mammoth Lakes. We were able to drive along the 'scenic loop' through pine and noble fir forests, but none of the other roads were opened yet - still covered in mounds of snow. We were able to get up to Twin Lakes and then we headed up to Mammoth Mountain ski area.

The view from our lunch table at Mammoth Mountain

There are 25 lifts and gondolas - plus tow-bars, Nordic areas and bunny hills! You can take a chair lift from town up to the ski area! We sat on the outside deck of The Yodeler Pub and had a late lunch at 8,909 feet! They allowed Snickers to sit at my feet. He sat in the sun and watched carefully for dropped French fries. We stayed as long as possible - it was warm in the sun, shielded from the wind behind glass walls and the views were so interesting - little kids at ski school, snow bunnies, sea gulls, skiers coming down the slopes. The colors were so bright. I had their 3-bean chili and it was delicious; DT had nachos and they were huge! Look carefully at the photo above - on the far left side you can see a line in the snow... that is a "half pipe" groomed into the snow. We were entertained throughout our lunch with snowboarders doing flips and turns in the half pipe.

After lunch, we drove back towards town and went to check out the two golf courses... they were covered in snow, but they did look promising if we ever venture near here again in the summer. Then, we drove back to our campsite. A good day. Tomorrow we will have a shock - well, to me it will be a shock - from nearly 9,000 feet above, to nearly 200 feet below sea level - we are going to Death Valley! (Not to mention it will be in the 90's in Death Valley tomorrow!) May not be able to update tomorrow... so I will catch you when I can...
