Grand Canyon National Park

Tuesday | 18 April 2000: We left Las Vegas by 9:30 a.m., driving South on 95 to 163 to Laughlin. (These details are for Howard - he is tracking our progress on his atlas.) At Laughlin, we stopped at a nice park along the Colorado River for a break. It was warm and the sky was clear. Crossing the river into Arizona, we drove up, up and up and then down into Kingman, where at the last minute, we decided to alter our planned course and follow Route 66 instead of Interstate 40. Route 66 was designated as a "scenic route" but it wasn't very scenic. It was a bit depressing, with closed-up motels in small towns. We did see a big dust storm, with a cyclone thrusting tumbleweeds hundreds of feet into the air. We entered Interstate 40 at Williams and headed straight North to the Grand Canyon. We stopped for diesel before entering the park and the air had a bit of a chill. We entered the National Park at 4:30 p.m. and checked into our reserved campsite in snow flurries! Mind you, it was SUNNY, and snowy! We set up camp, DT went for a quick jog and then we headed out to catch the sunset on the Canyon. It was beautiful, but it was SO COLD and SO WINDY it was hard to appreciate the beauty. We will try again tomorrow. Back for dinner at Goldie, with the furnace going full-force!
