Cabrillo National Monument

Tuesday | 13 February 2001 | San Diego, California: Last night it rained, it poured, it showered, it rained and then it rained more! The rain was so loud on Goldie's roof; it drowned-out the sound of the freeway! When we woke up this morning, the sky didn't look very promising, so we decided to do a driving tour of San Diego with my parents. We started by driving through Balboa Park, then along Harbor Drive around the bay to Point Loma to the Cabrillo Monument. (Frequent visitors to this site will remember our visit to this area last year.) The clouds provided a different view from the point - there was a lot of activity at the Naval Air Station below.

We walked around the Cabrillo National Monument between showers. (Cabrillo was the first European to sail into San Diego Bay.) We watched several planes take off from the airfield and spotted two submarines in port for repairs.  Here are a few photos for your enjoyment.

After the visit to Point Loma, we drove up along Mission Bay to La Jolla and had lunch at The Hard Rock Cafe. We then drove up to look at Torrey Pines Golf Club and then back to Old Town San Diego. San Diego was first settled at this area.  We found my Aunt and Uncle at Old Town and looked around at the historical buildings. At the stables, we found an old Wells Fargo stagecoach. All in all, we drove nearly 100 miles today - we saw beautiful, cloudy vistas of the Pacific, fantastic mansions and beautiful parks and gardens. Birds of Paradise are in bloom everywhere!

Added later: Tonight we had a lovely dinner with our old friends, Mark & Debbie. DT and Mark went to high school together, and we get together every chance we can. They took us to a fabulous new restaurant in Balboa Park - The Prado. By a strange coincidence, it is owned/operated by the same people as The Dakota Restaurant from last night. I had a red and yellow beet salad and mushroom risotto - both were delicious and well presented. We also tried bruschetta with black olive tapenade, spaghetti, seared tuna, tortilla soup and several other dishes. Mark and Debbie just love living in San Diego and they don't even mind the rain.
