Premier RV Resort | Clarkston, Washington
To be fair, I must explain rhyme and reason to my
uninformed readers: Jimmy Buffett is on tour, celebrating his exciting visit
to Africa with his young son, Cameron. Buffett's new CD is titled
The Far Side of the World. We spend way too much time
driving up and down Interstate 5, so I have decided to call this little
adventure The Far Side of I-5 Tour. Hate it or
love it - that's what you get through the early part of July.

Friday - 17 April 2002: Clarkston, Washington
- We left The Manor this morning at 9:07 a.m., only 7 minutes behind
schedule and possibly a record for us! Kelsey is dog/house sitting, and our
poor beagle was most unhappy as we pulled out of the driveway until he
discovered Kelsey standing beside him and promptly forgot completely about
us. Forty minutes of awful traffic later, we began our adventure on the
Far Side of I-5. I hope to not see that freeway again for weeks and
weeks. Our first stop was just outside of Portland, at beautiful Multnomah
Falls. We have stopped here many, many times... but it had rained very hard
last night and the falls were just bursting, so we stopped and took this
photo for your enjoyment:

Multnomah Falls
The Columbia River Gorge was just gorge-ous today!
Beautiful spring weather and every tree just bursting with life! Multnomah
Falls is the 5th highest waterfall in the United States. We continued on
Highway 84, which follows the Lewis & Clark Trail along the Columbia River,
on the south (Oregon) side of the river. The Gorge is very beautiful in the
spring and very green, but once you travel east of The Dalles, it is
sagebrush and plains! After Hermiston, we crossed the river into Washington
State and followed Highway 12 to Walla Walla, and through miles and miles of
freshly sprouted wheat fields to Clarkston, Washington, where we will stay
for three days. We are at a nice campground, right on the Snake River. The
nose of our motorhome faces the river and we have a constantly changing
view.
Clarkston, Washington is across the river from Lewiston, Idaho (get it,
Lewis & Clark???). Our view across the river is to Lewiston. Lewiston is
Idaho's lowest point in elevation at just over 700 feet and is Idaho’s only
port. (Did you think I would not give you something for Jeopardy tonight?)
DT ran and I walked (only 2 miles, but quite a milestone for 6-weeks-post
hysterectomy). We sat outside in the sun and watched the world go by: sea
gulls, osprey, ducks (ducklings!), red-winged black birds and geese, fishing
boats, trains on the other side of the river, bikers and runners along the
bike path that follows the river and chatted with fellow Holiday Rambler
owners. Dinner was a lovely Shabbat celebration: homemade chicken noodle
soup, tossed salad and freshly baked Challah.
We are here to attend the Pac-10 Track & Field Championships at Washington
State University this weekend. Please check back for updates.
In order to give the alternative view of the days events, DT will
occasionally add his comments: Today DT SAYS he is
too busy reading ("Best Medicine Wears Big Shoes" in today's Oregonian.)
about how Muggins The Clown of Vernonia, Oregon, will be traveling to
Afghanistan to help distribute medical supplies: "Gee, I can't imagine why
these people hate us?".
