Our personal travel journal

Clarkston, Washington

Sunday - 19 May 2002: Clarkston, Washington - I must start my journal today with a thought I had in the middle of the night (wicked windstorm kept me up for a while). As much as I enjoy a Beaver-Free afternoon, I am totally miffed I live in a State that can't supply funding for track programs at its two major universities.

The winds of last night blew away the rain clouds and we again had a beautiful, sunny and warm day. Today, we packed a picnic lunch to take in a little cooler, hoping to avoid "nacho tummy syndrome" from the snack bar at the track. More fans were in the stands today, and it looked to be an exciting day of track and field. Omer was in the second flight of the discus competition. I spent the first 90 minutes of the meet filming him with my video camera. Omer finished 2nd with 183 feet. He has already qualified, with a 198-foot toss a few weeks ago, for the NCAA finals in Baton Rouge in two weeks. After his competition, we congratulated him and then - being way too motherly - I gave him a huge slice of apple pie I had baked before we said goodbye.

Last night, after reading my website, Lisa phoned with comments on the photo of Gabe Jenning's hair style. I started laughing when I saw Gabe Jennings hair today! I told him I was starting a daily "Gabe's Hair" website, he smiled and happily posed for this photo. Gabe was one of Lisa's favorites during her internship in Sacramento for the Olympic Trials. With his winning personality, huge smile and "different" sense of style, it is easy to see why he is a popular student-athlete. Today, Gabe won the 1500 and took second (behind Duck Simon Kimati) in the 800.

Stanford won the meet, Oregon was second. UCLA women won, and Ducks women were way in the back. You can get the actual results at the Pac-10 website.

Again, we had too much sun - DT's knees are fried. After the meet, we drove south, but took an 11-mile gravel road detour down to the Snake River and then followed the river back to Clarkston - totally avoiding Idaho on the way home. We saw miles and miles and miles and miles of wheat fields and huge herds of cattle, one pheasant hen, red-winged blackbirds and several quail.

We arrived back to the motorhome, showered, and went out in search of pizza. We ended up at Tomato Brothers Pizza in Clarkston, but decided to try their Caesar salads and pasta. I had a truly terrible pasta dish, did not eat it, and when the girl asked me if I liked it, I told her no. It was still on the tab. If ever you are in Clarkston, do not eat at Tomato Brothers.
