Salt Lake City KOA | Red Rock BreweryTuesday - 21 May 2002: Salt Lake City, Utah
- Hey, we decided to go to Salt Lake City! Neither of us had visited here
before, so we are checking out the tourist spots for a few days. We left
Glenn Ferry, Idaho this morning at 10:00 a.m. It was cloudy, windy and COLD.
We bumped along Interstate 84 for several miles until the road turned smooth
and we could enjoy the views. GOOD NEWS! Last night (via the Buffett
web-group), I sold my extra Sunday "single" Jimmy Buffett concert ticket to
a girl in Phoenix! We deposited the ticket into the FedEx drop-off at
a truck stop... suspicious enough, but it works!
I keep telling my driver: "Honey, I just want to go on a vacation in the RV
where I can use the air conditioner, instead of the furnace." Does he listen
to me? As we dropped down into Utah, the skies became very dark and the wind
picked up. It was raining off and on. Lightening flashed to the west. A
little while later, it began SNOWING! A van slipped off the road and into a
ditch. Trucks slowed to 10 mph. Here is our view on I-84 this afternoon:

The weather isn't here...
The good news is that this snow didn't last long, or I
should say, it only stuck on the ground for about 5 miles and then it was
mixed snow and rain until we were about 20 miles north of Salt Lake City. We
are now camped for several days, and we have a phone line at our site ($3
extra per day) so I will be able to post many photos without a killer cell
phone bill! The campground is not very highly rated, but it is about
one-mile from downtown, so we decided to give it a try. It really is nice,
with everything we need and a great location!
We stayed home early in the evening, catching up on the evening news,
laundry and keeping the furnace running - it was COLD! It rained on and off
all evening. At about 8 p.m., we took the BC2 into the big city of Salt Lake
and did a drive-by of Temple Square and the downtown area. We were looking
for the
Red Rock Brew Pub. We found the Red Rock - the streets are a
confusing-at-first mix of numbered East's and West's, North's and South's...
the central point being, of course, the Temple. The Red Rock was really
hopping on a Tuesday night! It was a very attractive place, with a huge
menu. They serve about 6 types of their own beer (and Bud in the bottle for
weenies like me), wine and also a full bar. DT had a chopped salad and we
shared beer-battered fish and chips (fresh halibut flown-in fresh daily).
DT said, "Do you notice anything strange about the crowd?" I scanned the
faces and it hit me – every one of the several-hundred diners was white.
