Kathryn Albertson Park | Boise, Idaho

Thursday - 19 September 2002: Jackson, Wyoming - We woke to a clear and warm morning and headed out to Kathryn Albertson Park, just next to the campground. The park has a beautiful wild wetland, and landscaped gardens with several miles of paved paths meandering through the park. Snickers was in heaven! Get that dog in 2-inches of grass and he is in his element - tail and head held high, prancing, looking for rabbits. A completely different pooch than usual: sleeping, snoring, farting. Kathryn Albertson Park was especially pretty because we were there at sunrise. A mist rose off the ponds. Sleepy geese floated in the reeds. A few late, dwindling, blooms. A few newly-fallen autumn leaves.

DT ran on the trails, while Snickers and I walked. Then DT took the dog for a slow half-mile jog. So, Snicks was sleeping as we headed east on I-84, and he slept until we stopped for lunch at 1:00 pm. I would have dozed too, but we were listening to the Congressional Hearings (Iraq) on NPR. After the radio station faded, we had our own debate. Ours was a little more lively than the one in DC.

This was another serious driving day - over 400 miles. We left 84 at Idaho Falls, where we turned onto Highway 26 (which, believe it or don't - is the same Highway 26 that travels through Portland, Oregon). 26 follows the South Fork of the Snake River and goes along the shores of Palisades Lake, which is formed by Palisades Dam, where you can buy groceries at the nearby, cleverly-named, Dam Store. At Alpine Junction, we turned north on 89, which connects with 191 at Hoback Junction, and followed it into Jackson. (The route info is for Howard, who will correct me if I a wrong.) Today we saw a few deer on the side of the road, and about a million potato farms. We were delayed for about one hour with road construction, the BC2 (our Honda CRV tow-car) is now one-inch thick with mud and we stopped at the first campground we came across - The Virginian. I have stayed here before - easily remembered by the outrageously - high $47 summer rate! Still pretty expensive now at $37.

Mariners are on the satellite, Snickers is snoring and dishes are drying (chicken tacos and fruit). Tomorrow we are having a little adventure and I promise photos. The weather is really nice - warm and sunny!
