Cherry Hill RV Park
Wednesday - 9 October 2002: Washington, DC - We made
it! Even one day early! Yes, it was a bit more involved than our
usual 5-hour flight, but we certainly had more fun, saw something of Our
Great Land, met more people and visited old friends. With our zigzag route,
we drove 4,500 miles to get across the country! (Hubby drove every mile, of
course.) Too bad we didn't get frequent flyer miles! This is a beautiful and
varied country. People seem the same everywhere - they just start tawkin'
funny east of Boise.
This morning, while walking Snickers, I found the Winfield United Methodist
Church, a sign for the Winfield Community Building and the long-closed Winfield
Grocer. I decided we were in Winfield, West Virginia. I also found a note on the
Honda, requesting $16 for our campsite, to be placed in an (provided, "peel 'n
stik") envelope and deposited into a locked box in the office (as I mentioned
yesterday - a red garden shed). We never did see the owner/manager, and were on
the road by 9 a.m. In just a few miles, we turned onto I-68 and entered Maryland
about fifty miles later. The trees are very colorful in Maryland and it was a
very pretty drive through the northern "arm" of the state.
The closer we came to Our Nation's Capital, the more traffic we encountered.
By the time we hit the Beltway, it was bumper-to-bumper - but traveling the
speed-limit. Very nerve-wracking for me, and also My Driver, but he stayed his
course and we pulled into the campground around 2 p.m. Goldie will have a
rest for a while, while we give the Honda a work-out in DC traffic.
From our campsite at the very nice
Cherry Hill Park, it took about 25 minutes to get to Lisa's apartment in
Foggy Bottom. Of course, she looked wonderful and we are so excited to spend a
few days with her - and her many friends - even Kelsey & Katie! Since we were a
day early, we had to work around her schedule. She had a meeting at 4:30 and a
meeting at 8:00 - so we had an early dinner together and we brought Snickers
with us to see Lisa. Snickers is going to spend the next few days in a luxurious
doggy day camp. We are sure this was Snickers first ride in an elevator. He
didn't seem too interested in seeing Lisa, but was very interested in
sniffing-out every square inch of her apartment. He did not like going out on
her balcony - maybe the 9th floor was just too high. I took him for a quick walk
around the block. Not too much grass, and as a country dog, Snickers does not
know the other purpose of a fire hydrant. Plus, he drew a crowd! I guess people
in suits in downtown DC don't see dogs very often and Snickers made many friends
in our quick block. One guy dropped his brief case, went down to his knees and
put out his arms to Snickers! Girls - if you are single, get a dog and go for a
walk!
