Gulf
Waters RV ResortMonday - 4 November 2002: Fort
Myers, Florida
- It is getting bad. I have to look at the calendar to remember what day it
is. Of course, I can hear Al Michaels on the TV, so you would think I could
figure it out.
I was up and out early - just after the morning rush hour - to get Snickers
from his Dog Spa. After getting a bank loan to pay his tab (his room-service
bill alone was $9 - all for Peanut Butter Kongs - oh, don't worry, I will
take it out of his allowance) we drove back to Goldie. DT had finished
his run and was ready to hit the highway to Fort Myers. It is only a 3 hour
drive - and it really isn't a very exciting road - through orange groves and
swamps. There is a warning sign to watch for Bear Crossing the Road at one
point, but the usual view was trailer houses. Miles and miles of double-wides,
neatly arranged in rows, in communities for those 55+. (Please. Always let
my trailer house have wheels. And let me live with people of ALL ages!)
We checked into the Gulf Waters RV Resort, a nice campground with 400 sites.
About 30 sites are full. (The "season" starts in January.) While
registering, DT was warned to not harass the alligators in the pond. Not to
worry! Guess Snickers and I will not be walking "lake side". On the other
hand... hmmm... Nah! Just kidding. It was very warm today - hot actually,
about 90 degrees. DT and I took Snickers for a walk in the afternoon, but it
was too hot to really exercise. We sat in the shade (of our neighbors 5th
wheel), looking through guide books and brochures.
We are here to see our friend, Paul. Paul and Nancy live in Fort Myers in
the winter. Sometimes. Sorta. We took the "long way" to his house, down a
narrow strip of land called Fort Myers Beach. It was a pretty drive, over
several small keys, state parks and marinas, with beautiful views out to the
Gulf of Mexico. Paul and Nancy "winter" in a fabulous home in a gated
golfing community in Fort Myers. (Notice how we have a lot of friends living
on golf courses?) The entire house opens out, literally - with glass walls
that slide away and disappear - onto a pool and garden. The pool, garden and
several patios are completely screened-in and the golf course is just beyond
the garden. Nancy is out of town, visiting the grandchildren, so we went to
P.F. Chang's with Paul. We just love this restaurant and were not
disappointed - Kung Pao Chicken, Garlic Spinach, Cucumber Salad and grilled
white fish.
Tomorrow, the boys are going to go golfing and then Paul is coming here for
a tour of our home at the Gulf Waters RV Resort. This should be good.
