Chretin's
Friday - 29 November 2002: Yuma, Arizona - Happy
Hanukkah! We had a very wonderful and traditional Thanksgiving
with My 'Rents. Turkey and Football. Today, we really didn't do much, just
visited and laughed, which is the best thing you can do with family. (Oh, we ate
too! Why is it Thanksgiving leftovers are so wonderful?) The weather is not so
wonderful - it is warm (70) - but it keeps raining and is quite windy. We stayed
around the campground in the morning. Our generator has not been wanting to
start, so DT and Dad had been working on it and, finally this morning, DT had
the generator fired up and running! My Handyman! We took a little trip into town
for "supplies" - and that was our Big Adventure for the day.
Everywhere we go in America, the Supermarkets require "membership cards" for
their sale merchandise. We always refused to "join", though there is no fee. It
just seemed another way for more people to know your shopping habits, address
and other information. Finally, in June, in Nevada, we caved. It was to save $6
on bottled water. Now, I have joined in their savings game and try to collect as
many supermarket cards as possible. Today, we collected another - Fry's - to
bring our collection to six! (Saved $3.)
My George Washington University Colonels won AGAIN tonight! It is going to
be a great year for George Washington basketball!!! Late afternoon, we lit the
Menorah, said prayers, (sang those annoying songs) and had latkes before heading
into Yuma for a non-traditional Hanukkah dinner at Chretins. Chretins
is an absolutely ancient Yuma institution. Mexican food at its humblest. We have
eaten here before. The food is good (not great), the portions are enormous, the
service is friendly and you have to walk through the kitchen to reach the dining
room! Our water/chips server, Adam, is a senior at Yuma High (Home of the
Criminals). Adam apologized about the wait (there was no wait) and the crowds
(the place was swamped) and told us "it is always like this when a Friday falls
the day after Thanksgiving". (I am still not sure if he was joking.) Adam also
explained about the mascot at Yuma High. Seems years ago, Yuma High burned to
the ground, so classes were moved to the nearby Territorial Prison and competing
schools began teasing the students, and calling them "criminals" - so they
adopted the moniker for the new school. We had a fun time at Chretins - always
good to be with your family, even if it is on a Friday that falls the day after
Thanksgiving!
NOTE:
Chretin's moved in 2007 to 16th Street and Arizona Avenue, Yuma. New building,
so no more funky ambience.
