Nothing to Report

Sunday - 16 May 2004 - North Stonington, Connecticut: More excitement from the night before begins my post today. This time a whopper of a thunder and  lightning storm. At one point I thought we were going to be hit by a bolt! Lightning was cracking all around us and the thunder was shaking the camper. In the morning, we discovered it was shaking more than the camper - a tree was down in the campground. Luckily it did not damage people, campers or cars. This is the second time we have had a tree come down in a campground during a thunderstorm (two years ago on Hilton Head), hope it is the last!

Another 300+ mile day! This time on interstates, this time in traffic. Not fun! We left Hershey and drove through pretty farming communities along Route 422 East, took a short road north, and caught I-78 east through New Jersey and into New York. We crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge over the Hudson and stopped at the toll booth on the east side. The sign read, "Cars $3". The toll booth dude said, "Towing?". DT answered yes, and the dude said "$14". (DT adds: "Apparently, when crossing you have the option of either crossing or purchasing the bridge.") The really bad thing was that we were paying to drive on some of the bumpiest, torn-apart, pot-hole-ridden surfaces you can imagine!

Just before 2 p.m., we entered Connecticut and stopped at the Welcome Center which is at one of those awful "Service Areas" - fuel and fast food. So it came to be that on I-95, exit 12, in Connecticut was the first time we put the dish up just to check email and update my website. We parked in a sea of semi's. They all had either their generator or engine running, so no one even noticed our generator. The dish went up, locked on and I updated and downloaded and stowed the dish in less than 10 minutes.

We tried to take a "scenic drive" - just to get off the busy interstate - but these are old road and they are narrow and they feature bridges anything taller than 11 feet can not pass under - and this time the measurement was true. So, back to the interstate after just a few miles of that wonderment - thankfully there was a school with a huge parking lot for a turn-around!

We are just a few miles from the shore, a few miles from Foxwood Casino and a few miles from all the interesting things to see and do around the Mystic Seaport.
