Cape Cod or Bust!

Tuesday - 18 May 2004 - Cape Cod, Massachusetts: We made it! I realize there may be a few readers who do not know the purpose of Our Latest Adventure. It is the Happiest of Occasions. We are going to a Big Wedding on Cape Cod Friday! (Yeah, yeah, we know they have this thing called an airplane... but that is not our style, is it? Plus, if we flew out to The Cape, what would you read every morning when you have your tea? The newspaper?)

This morning, we left Mystic, Connecticut, and drove through Rhode Island. We had to drive over a very high, very scary and totally fogged-in bridge (toll $5 - $1 per axle). Today felt just like a Memorial Day Weekend on the Oregon Coast - cold, damp and foggy. A few of my readers may also be unaware that in 1979-80 we lived in New Hampshire and have visited this part of Our Country before. In Newport, Rhode Island, the houses were amazing. Of course, huge yachts were docked at each huge seaside home! We left the side roads when we entered Massachusetts and followed I-95 to Cape Cod. We stopped for fuel - 68 gallons, $123. We tried for a while to drive the scenic route, but the roads are just too narrow and winding to enjoy the scenery, so we made our way back to the main highway through the middle of The Cape, Route 6, and found our campground. It will be easier to explore using the Honda.

Nauset Light

We had arrived one day ahead of our reservation. They acted like this was going to be some sort of calamity, though the place did not look too lively. I asked if my request for a satellite-friendly site would be accommodated and she called her husband on the walkie-talkie and he took me out to look at their 100+ sites in a golf cart. Only about 20 sites were taken, so I have no idea why they were so upset at our early arrival! We found the perfect spot, and filled up our propane tank before settling in. This was the first time we have had to buy propane, and we have used the new coach for 110 nights. (Can you believe we have spent that much time in Our Intrigue since December 9th???) We needed 11 gallons of LPG... so at least one thing on our coach is getting good mileage!
 
After setting up camp (ha, isn't that an amusing expression?), we went down to the beach. While we were at Nauset Beach, several whales spouted to Welcome Us to Cape Cod! We have a very exciting adventure planned for tomorrow, so check back!
