2004 Olympic Trials | Day 7

Saturday - 17 July 2004 - Sacramento, California: Another hot day in Sacramento! And another early morning watching the Tour de France coverage on OLN. Fascinating racing this morning - all of it uphill. So much strategy. I can't imagine how the racers can ride with "fans" running along-side of them... waving flags and signs in their face... especially the weird, naked fans. Goodness! DT came back from his jog this morning to report that he had "passed Alan Webb on the bike path". Well, actually, Webb was running in one direction and DT was running in another, but that is just a minor detail. After DT finished, he found Webb being massaged/manipulated on the lawn at the campground. They talked for a while. Webb seemed to be in pain... but it could be because his trainer was turning him inside-out with the kneading! Alan Webb is only concentrating on the 1500 tomorrow night. Nothing else.

I was a no-show at the track today. The 200 heats were going to be on TV and it was just too hot to go sit in the sun... when I am going to WANT to sit in the sun tomorrow to watch the many finals. DT did go over to watch part of the events - but only because his friend was going to run in an exhibition race - Men's Masters 800. (This race is not for qualifying for the Olympic Team, it is just a great opportunity for over-40 racers to compete.) It was interesting watching the races on TV... I could phone DT at the track and tell him what was happening! DT reported to me that after the sprints, the stands cleared-out and there were about 1000 fans left in the 25,000-seat stadium. He could see Captain Jim and the Lovely Roxanne sitting alone in their section directly across from him. So, he decided to go across the stadium to sit with Captain Jim. The volunteers/ushers would not allow him to sit with Captain Jim because DT did not have a ticket for that section! Serious. So, he walked all the way back around the stadium to his assigned seat, in his nearly-empty assigned section of the bleachers. Wouldn't you know it - the only people in the entire section were sitting in our seats! DT came home.

Tonight we had dinner again at Biba and were joined by Brother Steve and Gina. As usual we had a lovely meal and a wonderful evening with our family.

A crazy-wild party was happening next door at Captain Jim's Bounder when we arrived from dinner! Faces from the past, old stories from even older runners, memories from aching decathletes. We laughed so hard at the old tales, some of which we had heard/told a hundred times.
