Malacon area of Puerto Penasco

Monday - 19 January 2004 - Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico: Chilly this morning! It was about 45 degrees overnight and we had dew on everything this morning. But, don't worry - it was still "partly" sunny! We even had to wear sweatshirts to walk down the beach for our al fresco breakfast. The campground is next to, and associated with, a nice resort hotel. They have several restaurants and bars and you can dine on a patio overlooking the ocean - very nice. The menu was good and the waiter thought DT looked just like Julio Iglesias. (Yeah, whatever, in my dreams.) The waiter would come by with the coffee carafe and say, "Hoolio, jew wan more caffe?" He was a crack-up. Of course, on the way back to our motorhome we stopped to look at the dazzling display of Rolex (i.e. Faux-lex) watches for sale on the beach. The price of Rolex watches has come down. When we lived in Taipei they were $25 and now in Mexico (15 years later) the price is $20. Such a deal! (NOTE: Don't buy counterfeit items, it is stealing!)

Our plan for the day was to go into town! There is a busy plaza - under construction - surrounded with tacky tourist shops and also a fish market. My Mom wanted to buy shrimp - Puerto Penasco is famous for their shrimp and you would not believe the size of the shrimp in the local market! The shops were not very exciting - same old stuff available in every shop in every Mexican tourist town. We did buy a few postcards, and looked at the new plaza. When completed - it will really be nice!

Tonight, succumbing to our new habit, we gathered at the sea wall to enjoy an especially beautiful sunset. Though the clouds made for a colder day, they certainly improved the sunset!

A huge group came into the campground this evening - we would estimate at least 60 motorhomes - all of them Dutch Star brand. We assume they know each other! They are all camped together and have all sorts of events planned - all neatly listed on a big bulletin board. They were greeted and led to their campsites by caravan members wearing green foam frog hats, and seem to be a very organized bunch. The motorhomes are simply beautiful (well, not as beautiful as our little home-on-wheels, of course) and at least one guy has a DataStorm on his roof.

For dinner we went back into town to Regina's "Sea and Mexican Food" Restaurant. Every wall at Regina's is painted a different color and my Mom and I tried to figure-out exactly the color of the wall across the room, until we finally decided the only thing in nature that color is a rose named "Tropicana"! Aren't we clever?! One wall was purple, one was Go-Duck yellow - but it all fell together to make a very inviting room. The room was also warm, the food was delicious and the portions were huge. No one finished their meal. Though we went out at 7:00 pm tonight, most of the restaurants were already closed. It was quiet in town today. And, it is chilly! The three-day weekend is over and most of the Gringos have gone home.
