JJ's Cantina | La Curva

Tuesday - 20 January 2004 - Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico: Again, the weather was just fantastic - not a cloud in the sky all day. It was a bit cooler, but we didn't need a sweater until the sun set. We needed to go to the ATM. We needed to buy soap. Mom & Dad needed bottled water. DT thought this was way too much activity for one day. He was kidding, of course, but we are relaxing so much, three errands are way too stressful! Late in the morning we drove over to the new Super Ley's. Mom and Dad have spent a lot of time in Mexico, in much larger cities, and they were quite impressed with the market. The prices are simply incredible - the same brands we buy at home, less than half the price. The only difference is the label is in Spanish. Gorgeous Haas avocados are about 30 cents each. This close to the border, you can pay in US dollars and they give change in pesos.

We dropped the groceries back at the camper and drove out to the point - Rocky Point - for a look around and lunch. There is an actual enclave out on Rocky Point. Most the homes are owned by Americans and used as weekend homes. There are no stores, few restaurants or bars and the streets are sand. There are mansions next door to rusty trailers. A fellow camper told us to be sure to have lunch at JJ's, so we did. The place was kinda dumpy, and not the cleanest joint in the world - but it was easy to see that during the weekend this place would be hopping. Today, it was dead. It is mostly a beer hall, as the food service is a walk-up counter, with two workers serving about 10 items. There is a huge patio, carved into the bank down to the beach. We found a table in the sun and enjoyed a good lunch. There were cats everywhere. One of the cats sat at DT's feet and begged. DT fed the cat a tortilla chip and she ate it!

Actually JJ's is very active in the local community. The patrons organize and give hundreds of toys and thousands of dollars to local charities through their Santa Claus Charity. Luckily, we showed up at JJ's in time for Happy Hour!

Puerto Penasco pilotAlong the dirt road out to Rocky Point we passed at least 5 new resorts. A few are open, but most are under construction - or partially opened during construction. DT jogged through this area one morning and said the facilities look very nice. Nine (of the 18) holes of the golf course on Rocky Point have opened and there is another golf course being built on the other side of town.

We had a nice show at the sunset cocktail hour - two men were using some sort of parachute things, with motor-driven fans behind them for power. I don't know what it is called, but it was pretty cool and the motor was incredibly quiet. Just the thing for sneaking across a border.

And speaking of sneaking across a border, tonight we listened to Our Fearless Leader give his State of the Union address. Honestly, I had difficulty watching the speech, not only due to my politics. Someone in a motorhome near us kept changing the channel, and every time they used their remote, they changed our channel too. (I TOLD YOU we are crammed in here!) Unfortunately, they kept switching to the Home Shopping Network Silver Jewelry Show... which I found quite amusing... like you can't find enough jewelry to buy in Mexico??? Probably deciding what to buy with all the extra money they are going to have once those Bush tax cuts come through.

For dinner, late, after the State of the Union had been clarified to us, we went to La Curva - a very popular restaurant and bar in town. La Curva serves Mexican food - enchiladas, tacos, burritos, etc. It was a really good choice, and a fun restaurant. We were surprised to see several customers in the place at the late hour. DT and I had tonight's special, Taco Salad. It was $4.50 and so huge, neither of us could finish our dinner. La Curva had satellite TVs showing US college basketball. The restaurant is away from the main tourist area, and is next to a girly-bar. Here is my Mom interpreting their sign:

Well, ain't it the truth?
