Super Ley's | Puerto Penasco, Mexico
Sunday - 25 January 2004 - Puerto Penasco, Sonora,
Mexico: This afternoon, we were watching the Duck basketball game,
but it was too depressing, so Mom and I went over to the Super Ley's to
search for fresh basil. We didn't find basil, but we still left with many
items, including still-warm corn tortillas. Here is a photo I snapped of the
pastry aisle.

Most of the displays are "open", so anyone can touch
anything - even the deli counter is open to the public! But, my Mom said
this is the first time she had seen eggs refrigerated in a Mexican market.
She was also surprised to notice that the workers making tortillas, and the
butchers, were all wearing masks over their mouths. Things are really
changing in Mexico. Still not sure about the child-labor laws however. Your
groceries are bagged by very young boys - about 10 or 12 years old. They
wear adorable uniforms, complete with hats. If they take your groceries to
your car, they expect a little tip. Shoppers are also expected to tip the
security guard in the parking lot. If you tip nicely, he will help you
back-out of your parking space.
We went down to the Happy Hour at the hotel tonight. For the first time, I
had a margarita and it knocked me flat on my burro. The party was going
strong again tonight and there wasn't an empty chair. In addition to the 70
motorhomes in the caravan, there were two tourist buses parked outside. A
Gringo had brought his trumpet and when the strolling mariachi band arrived
at their table, he got up and played about 5 songs with them! He was
fantastic and then another tourist sang a song! People were dancing. People
were singing. People were clapping. Pitchers of margaritas were flying out
of the bar. They were rocking and DT and I were the only two party-goers not
drawing social security.

Sunset Sunday
