Borrego Springs Golf | The Palms at Indian Head
Thursday | 11 January 2007 | Borrego
Springs, California: It was only dreams of apple pie that could get
me out of bed, into my NIKE's and out the door to get in my 10,000 steps.
Though it was icy and snowy at home, we enjoyed a beautiful morning here -
clear skies and no wind. I brought my camera along on the walk to snap
photos of the campground. DT went for a long run in the sun. This RV Park
has a championship Par 35 nine hole golf course. I suppose they will add
another nine when they expand, but for now, we are very impressed with
The Springs at Borrego, staff and facilities.

Ah... and then the pie! Jane Stern was right, but only
because she has never tried my apple pie. The filling was simply perfect,
but it wasn't a butter crust. The crust was incredibly flaky, yet it just
isn't the same made with that yucky shortening. Ban shortening, people!

Doesn't that look good enough to eat?
After our pie breakfast, we drove into the post office to
ship orders and deposit our bottles, cans and newspaper at the local Kiwanis
Club Recycling Center located in the parking lot of the supermarket. Bumper
sticker in town: Experience Global Warming: Visit Borrego Springs. Next on
our agenda was nine holes of golf!

As we began playing, it became windy. By the time we were on
the third hole, it was difficult to stand, our hats kept blowing off our
heads and the sand was getting in our teeth and eyes. By the fourth hole, it
was down-right dangerous to breathe and by the fifth hole, I was attacked by
tumbleweeds and could not see to the flag. I walked back (more like flew
back) to the motorhome! (Of course, DT kept playing one more hole and they
did give us a wind-check at the club house for another round at no charge.)

The 5th hole - what happened to the sun?
The campground was a hive of activity. It looked like the
opening scene in The Wizard of Oz - everyone scurrying to put items
away, it's a twister, bringing-in awnings, strapping-down folding
chairs and taking the dog for a quick potty walk before hunkering-down for
the duration. Our motorhome was a mess - my beautiful bicycle had fallen
over and had crashed in the sand! Our chairs were blown every which way. I
had to bring in the window awnings and tuck the chairs away before climbing
inside to safety. There is a coating of sandy dust on everything - including
our computer equipment. DT was back quick enough too - it just isn't fun
playing golf in a sandy wind storm.
There was nothing to do but eat another piece of pie.
The wind calmed a bit - just enough that we crawled our way down to the
mineral spa for a soak before going out to dinner and back in time to
The Palms at Indian Head. The hotel was built in 1947 and was once the
weekend playhouse of Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant and Bing
Crosby. Later the hotel fell into disrepair, due to a fire and neglect. The
property became a Nudist Colony and then a camp for delinquent boys before
being purchased in 1993 by David Leibert and Cindy Wood. They have since
hired a local chef and have turned the dining room of the 12-room hotel into
the showcase of Borrego Springs -
The Krazy Coyote Restaurant. Our meals were outstanding, the wait staff
was pleasant and the mood in the dining room was inviting. I kept expecting
Frank Sinatra to walk around the corner in a white dinner jacket. But, alas,
no such luck.
Texas Rib Eye Steak, topped with sautéed onions, mushrooms & garlic,
finished with a delicious demi-glace sauce - served with mushroom risotto
