Gold Beach, Oregon
Saturday | 3 March 2007 | Gold Beach, Oregon:
After such terrible weather - we woke to a brilliant blue sky! Our
campsite is just at the mouth of Hunter Creek, so it was a quick walk to the
beach. DT ran, while I walked on the beach. There were a few sea lions in
the creek, where it reaches the sea. This is another great Oregon Beach -
every morning the sea offers up brilliant white agates for lucky
beachcombers.

Gold Beach boat docks
In the afternoon, we went for a drive into Gold Beach. A few
campgrounds were scouted-out for future reference and we stopped at the
wharf where we could hear all the barking sea lions last night. There must
have been fifty or more sea lions on the dock and another hundred on the
shore beyond. The big guys were really enjoying the sunny weather

We also stopped in to the fish cannery where we bought the
wonderful alder-smoked salmon last year.
Fisherman
Direct now pack their fabulous albacore in smaller "lunch-sized" pop-top
cans. We are seriously re-supplied. Next we drove up the Rogue River a bit
just to see what it looks like in the sunshine. Errands accomplished, we set
out to the only sports bar in Gold Beach -
The Rod & Reel. Okay, we are in Oregon and it was Civil War Saturday.
What are the chances the only sports bar for miles (and miles and miles)
would be closed? The Rod and Reel was closed - until 3:30.
Can you even imagine this? DT and I had to drive back to the RV to watch the
first half, then we drove back to the Rod & Reel to catch the second half
with the local fans.
Except there were none. Except for one (never seen, behind a screen)
customer in the back corner playing video poker, hubby and I were the only
customers during the entire second half. GO DUCKS. It wasn't much of a
second half anyway, as the Oregon Ducks were so far ahead of the Oregon
State Beavers, but we enjoyed our private sports bar and deep-fried fish.

Back at the campground, we went back to the beach to watch
the sunset. Maybe it wasn't the prettiest we have ever seen, but there was
no wind and it was nearly warm on a beach in Oregon (rare thing indeed).
